Reviews

1. Century Original Wavemaster Review - For basic training

As the name suggests this is the first freestanding bag from Ringside, and during the years it becomes popular equipment in home gyms.

What are its benefits?

  • It has a compact design which makes it an excellent choice to use and store it in a garage or a small room.
  • You can adjust it from 47" to 68" in 3" increments so you can set it to the most suitable level to your height to practice punches or kicks.
  • At the lowest level, thanks to the massive 250 lb weight bottom, it is somewhat stable, but it is not hard for a pro kicker to fall it over.
  • The shell of the bag is durable vinyl which lasts for long. The inner filling is high-density foam which is neither too soft nor too firm, so it provides satisfying absorption and user experience.

The problems with it

  • The first thing I do not like is the size of the bag. The width is 13 inch which is OK, but the length is just 26". So, it is short, and with that, we cannot place kicks and punches at the same time. (Unless you are a high kicker.) So, for kickboxing, it does not provide a helpful training experience.
  • Also, at the maximum height, it cannot be hit with powerful punches since it may fall over which is very annoying during a workout.

Is it for you?

Well, if you need a bag for cardio and practicing boxing at a beginner level and weak/medium strikes, I recommend this Wavemaster bag. Also, not a bad buy if you are on a budget.

Otherwise, if you are a big puncher and kicker, this bag is not for you.

2. Century Cardio Wavemaster - For Cardio & Women

As its name tells this bag is made for cardio workouts to burn fat and develop endurance with boxing and kicking training. I particularly recommend it for women since it is lightweight and gives an exceptional training experience for girls.

What I like

  • Compared to Original it has much longer padding, 40 inches, so for kickboxing, it is a better choice. Plus, you can adjust it from 53.5" to 65.5" by four increments. Although, the diameter is just 10.5, so rather thin. But it is still enough, and that size helps to develop your accuracy.
  • On this list, this bag is the lightest since it is just 170 lb when entirely filled. Hence, it is easy to relocate.

Drawbacks

Because of its light base, it falls over if it is beaten with full power, especially if you kick it. So, it is not useful for developing your punching or kicking power. However, it was not made for that purpose.

Is it for you?

If you need a fitness bag for cardio training, and not for powerful hits, then this bag is a good buy for you. It withstands light blows and kicks. If you are a pro, do not buy it.

3. Century Powerline Wavemaster Review

Well, this model is the enhanced version of Original.

Best features

  • Compared to the Original, the diameter of the bag is 17.5 inches about 4 inches extended. That extra wideness provides more possibilities to practice various techniques and more user-friendly for beginners.
  • Also, it is about 20 lb heavier, so it is more stable. Fewer users complain about wobbling or falling over.
  • It is also adjustable but in 7 levels which is a pretty useful function since users can find the optimal height for their training.

Problems

  • The length of the bag is still a problem here since it is just 26 inches so for kickboxing it does not provide an adequate punching bag workout experience.
  • Also, when it is set to the maximum height, it is willing to fall over after a powerful hit. But, thanks to the extra load it is more stable.

Is it for you?

Well, for beginners, and maybe intermediate level martial art training and for cardio it is suitable, but not for pros. Considering the features, it is a better value than the Original.

4. Century Wavemaster XXL Punching Bag Review

Without a doubt, XXL is the winner of this list. It is a professional free standing heavy bag made for even advanced level trainees.

What we like

  • Even it is 270 lb, same weight as Powerline, it is far more stable thanks to its 28" extended base which is wider at the bottom. Hence, it is suitable for developing kicking and punching power.
  • Even if this freestanding kickboxing bag is not adjustable, XXL is a great option for tall people since it is 69 inches tall and has a "full" body. So, this Century Wavemaster bag is perfect for kickboxing or any other martial art to practice defense and offense techniques.

Drawbacks

Well, since XXL is the top quality bag of this product line, it cost almost twice as much. Also, it is a big boy so relocating is not easy.

Is it for you?

Well, no matter if you are big or small, at a beginner or advanced level, this stand up bag will give you an excellent training experience. That is why I have chosen it to be the best buy on the list.

Buying Guide for Free Standing Boxing Bag

From the chart about you may already know which is the best heavy bag for you, but let me give you more advice on what to check.

1. Your body weight and the weight of the bag

A crucial factor to check is the weight of the bag. The heavier you are, the more massive bag you will need to get enough resistance. If the equipment is too light, it falls over which is very annoying during the training. The same is true, for the power of your strikes.

If you are at an advanced level with big punches and kicks or a big guy, the only option for you is XXL.

Otherwise, for an average user, the other bags will do.

2. The length of the bag

As you see above, Powerline and Original have a rather short body, so they are not the best option if you want to practice punches and kicks at the same time. Although, you can practice the kicks and punches separately by adjusting the height of the bag.

For kickboxing workouts Wavemaster cardio or XXL are the most suitable options.

As you see the image above, a 6 feet tall user can train on these bags comfortably. If you are taller, you may find them a bit short. So, you may consider getting a hanging punching bag instead to teak it to your height.

3. For what will you use it mainly?

I know, most of you are here because you need a home exercise equipment to burn fat, develop your endurance or just to practice boxing or kickboxing a little bit. You are not pros.

If that is the case, you do not need to spend too much on a bag, since the basic ones will do for you. (Unless you do not mind paying money on a professional standing bag.)

If you are a pro or someone who is serious about martial art type workouts, again XXL is the best option. But the all-time winner is the Ringside Elite freestanding bag.

FAQ

How to fill the base?

Water or sand is recommended. But from my experience, the combination of the two is the best. That is the way, we can get a very heavy base leading to maximum stability.

What other equipment do I need?

Well, if you place these standalone bags on an uneven or slippery floor, they will wobble or move. So, a cheap rubber mat is not a bad idea to put under it.

Also, the shell of the Wavemaster bags is vinyl which is a durable material, but it hurts the skin of the bare knuckles. So, boxing gloves are recommended.

And, do not forget about hand wraps as well to protect the bones and joints of your hands from the impact.
